Reed Ulery currently serves as the Director of Bands at North Decatur Junior-Senior High School in Greensburg, IN. In this role, he teaches woodwind, brass, and percussion instruments to students in grades 5-12, jazz band, applied music, and AP Music Theory. He also directs the extracurricular football and basketball pep bands, and serves as head director for the Decatur County Greensburg Marching Band. Reed graduated from the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music with a Bachelor of Music Education with a concentration in Horn and the Hutton Honors Notation with the Class of 2021. Reed has been recognized as an IMEA Outstanding Future Music Educator, an IAEN Excellent Arts Educator, and by the Music Achievement Council’s “Choose to Teach” program at the 2022 Midwest Clinic. He frequently performs as a hornist with the Indiana Wind Symphony, the Indianapolis Symphonic Band, and as a member of a brass quintet, and has served as a guest conductor for the Indiana Wind Symphony, the Southeast Indiana Honor Band, and as a horn sectional coach for several middle and high school honor ensembles. Outside of school, he enjoys cycling, baking, traveling, live music, and spending time with his family (and their Boston terrier, Millie!).
Reed began studying classical piano at age 8 and began studying horn as a member of his sixth grade band in Nashville, TN. While in high school, Reed was the principal horn for the Mt. Lebanon High School Wind Ensemble, Symphony Orchestra, and Chamber Orchestra. He was a featured senior soloist in the 2016 Mt. Lebanon String Festival, and performed as the principal first horn for the 2017 PMEA All-State Wind Ensemble. Reed was the drum major of his high school marching band for two years, and he held the role of student director of the chamber choir for his junior and senior years of high school as well. During his time at Indiana University, Reed performed with the Jacobs School of Music Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band, Concert Band, All-Campus Band, All-Campus Chorus, and as a part of several recitals. Reed presented his Senior Recital on Horn on October 19, 2020. Off the stage, Reed also performed with the Marching Hundred, Big Red Basketball Band, and Crabb Band as a member of the mellophone section. Reed served as a member of the Marching Hundred Undergraduate Staff for two years and as an officer for several student organizations including President and Treasurer for NAfME @ IU, Vice President for the Marching Hundred Student Organization, and as an Active Brother in the Alpha Zeta chapter of Kappa Kappa Psi, honorary band service fraternity. |
